Paul Phua is an entrepreneur, a professional poker player, and an award-winning industry leader. Although Paul has racked up some impressive tournament wins over the years, he’s also famous for co-founding the Triton Series of Poker. Outside of poker, Phua is a dedicated philanthropist who has raised millions of dollars for various charity groups.
Paul’s story begins in Malaysia, where he was raised on the coast of Sarawak. Soon enough, Phua’s blossoming career swept him to Macau, one of the most legendary gambling centers in the world.
He had his first taste of success after becoming a VIP junket tour operator in Macau, a lucrative business that provided Paul with a stake in the city’s booming gambling industry.
As Paul developed strong connections with casinos throughout Macau, he became interested in poker for the first time. These business relationships provided Paul with a significant source of income, but they also pulled the Malaysian entrepreneur into a poker community that was totally new to him. Despite being well into his forties, Paul Phua started joining poker games and learned how to play at the highest level.
Today, Paul Phua is considered one of the best poker players in the world, and he regularly wins millions at tournaments around the globe. In terms of money won, he is the top Malaysian poker player on the planet. Although his natural instincts for the game cannot be denied, Paul also learned from some of the most famous poker stars in the world during his time in Macau. Figures like Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey, and Chau Giang all came to Macau in search of high stakes games, and Paul Phua was there to watch them in action.
Paul’s achievements in the world of poker have been astounding. He won the first major tournament he ever entered, taking home $1.6 million at the Aspers 100K High Rollers event in London. In 2016, he won first place at the No Limit Hold ‘Em event during The Monte Carlo One Drop Extravaganza. A second-place win in 2019 at Triton’s No Limit Hold ‘Em – Short Deck event in Jeju saw Phua walk away with around $2 million. He won a further $2.18 million that year at Triton’s next even in Montenegro. In London, he achieved a career-high in winnings with second place at Triton’s No Limit Hold ‘Em Main Event in 2019, raking in $3.14 million. There are countless other examples of Paul Phua winning big at major poker tournaments.
Today, Triton is a legendary name in the global poker community. With high stakes games and a focus on thrilling entertainment for audiences, Triton has clearly carved out it’s place in the modern poker world. Its hard to imagine it now, but at one point Triton was just an idea floating around in Paul Phua’s mind. Along with Richard Yong, Phua’ built the Triton Series into a massive poker empire with some of the most exciting events around the world, turning a dream into a reality.
In 2019, Paul was honored with the GPA Industry Person of the Year Award. The Global Poker Awards chose to recognize Phua for his contributions to the poker industry through Triton Poker, an organization that has been truly groundbreaking in recent years.
